Not Pak Tak Yuen

Not Pak Tak Yuen
It's back around the other side of the world now, and on the hottest day on the planet Denise and I decided to set out to see what had happened to the place where I used to live. We took the KCR out to Sha Tin, and had a good wander around the shopping centres there - I think they've been breeding since I left. We then thought we'd take a walk out to see if we could find Pak Tak Yuen. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that Fo Tan was actually the closer station so it was a very long (and hot) stroll. Eventually we got to Fo Tan and walked up the hill to find, as expected, that Pak Tak Yuen just isn't there any more. This photo was taken from the road directly below, looking up at the new apartments that have replaced the complex where we used to live. Not a photographic masterpiece by any means, but one that my clan will nonetheless appreciate I hope.

Hey I was brought up there as well, its a pity thats there is nothing left of it. It was such a fun place to be when you were young.

Wow!

I went looking for the old place on Google maps and couldn't find it either. A google search later revealed this blog - sad to see it gone.

I remember the white buildings with the different coloured balconies. We lived in "N15" - I wish I could make contact with some of the people from that time. I was only in HK for a year, but so many memories!

Sha Tin EFS across the way - Form 3H!

Yeah - I lived there for several years so when I returned to HK for the first time since I left in '88 - when I took this picture - I couldn't resist going to have a look at the old place.

What's amazing is that when I left they were building (or had just finished) I think 2 new blocks on the site there. So in the 18 years in between they'd knocked it all down and started again. That's some proper high-rise too...I'm sure the old flats were 5 or 6-story only. I guess higher density was required....!

Strange;

We left two years before the handover, and there wasn't any new building then; I can remember some of the shorter blocks - but I thought they were the oldest ones...

Oh well, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

We lived there too, in the newer blocks, not more than 8 floors and fantastic apartments, triplex! it was a really excellent development. no one but our family lived in the flat, it was knocked down , a once only use.
